"When Koolhaas chose to focuson Elements, he produced a text (in both book and exhibition format) that givesus the tools to understand what architecture is and how is it has evolved (orstagnated). Even though he didn't invite people to show projects in thetraditional sense, we sawa hopeful undertone to Elements -- it is a resource that can be revisitedover and over again, one that will arm the current and futuredesigners of our built world with the knowledge they'll need to addressthe issues they have yet to even confront.

雷姆·库哈斯提出的“Fundamental: Elements ofArchitecture”（建筑基本元素）的主题，其主旨在于用一种“分解”的独特视角去追溯、感知和理解现代建筑这一百年来的演变，即回归本源式的重新梳理。课题希望通过对建筑或者泛建筑类的原型做研究，重新定义该元素的功能、形式、内容、意义，创造新的空间内容。

不少建筑师或者组织对这么基本要素都有过研究和拓展，在Dogma 的设计 Field of Walls 里，墙回应了艾森曼的皮拉内西变奏曲，重新想象乔瓦尼·皮拉内西(Giovanni Piranesi)的坎波·马齐奥(Campo Marzio)蚀刻版画(1792年)。这种做法使得那些悬挂在一种原始的白色模型旁边的平面和剖面图变得迷人起来，嵌在蚀刻版画里的政治不是形式的作用，而是墙的作用所引导的。

It responds to Eisenman’s Piranesi Variation’s brief to reimagine Giovanni Piranesi’sCampo Marzio (1792) etchings. The Belgian practice has rendered ravishing plansand sections which hang beside a pristine white model of a possible Romedominated by a grid of walls. Dogma, cryptically, are lead by “how the politics embedded in the etchings are not a function offorms but of walls.

Cité de Réfuge wasdeveloped within the context of the 2007 Rotterdam Architecture Biennale, thetheme of which was ‘Power’.Ceuta is a Spanish enclave on Moroccan soil. The project gives a face to thepoliticized border crossing at Ceuta: a refugee city in the no-man’s-land between two cities (Ceuta and Tangier), between two countries(Spain and Morocco), between two continents (Europe and Africa). This city isformed by a large square of 482 x 482 metres that is surrounded by a colonnadedstructure, like a thick rampart. Within this wall all the infrastructure elementsof a border crossing are to be found: offices, hotels, stores… The walled plaza is left undisturbed, without a programme. It is amarket square, a reception space, like a quay. In this way the Cité de Réfuge reflects the powerlessness toachieve solutions to the problems occurring on this border. At the same timethe project investigates the city in its most radical, concise form: as adeliberate act, a political decision.

HE STUDIO SOUGHT TOEVOKE THE POWERFUL EFFECT OF THEIR REPEATING STEPS. FLIGHTS AND LANDINGS THATREACH,DOWN TO THE EARTH. COMPOSED OF 154 FLIGHTS AND ALMOST 2.500 STEPS. THEEFFECT OF CLIMBING UP AND DOWN VESSEL'S STAIRCASES CREATES A PERSONAL RHYTHM INEACH VISITOR, RISING TO 46 METRES TALL.
