STUDIO课程简介:

Museums and galleries reflects a city’s culture and identity and its citizens the opportunity to express ideas and come together as a collective society. From the early private collection of found objects, the Museum typology continues to adapts and evovles with the development of Art throughout time.

The role of Museum is constantly changing and the creation of unique spaces to hold art exhibitions and social activties in the contemporary lives we now live in is demanding.

What is the Museum of the Future?

As the medium of Art continues to redefine itself, we find traditioal art galleries limited in its potential to ‘contain’ contemporary art.

What is good museum Architecture?

As a result, we find museum organisations expanding and creating new spaces that can accomodate the ever-changing world of Art.

When tasked to design the Musuem of the Future, we start to ask ourselves;

- what are the functions of an exhibition?

- how important is display?

- how important are education and mediation?

- should museums be producers?

- does size matter?

- what role do or should artists have in a museum?

- how does globalization affect museums?

- what is a museum?

The studio intends to investigate the role of museums through the lens of a new contemporary art gallery.

To do this, students are given a site directly adjacent to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. The project will be an extention of the NGV, providing an additional 20,000 m2 of exhibition space and public spaces.

Brief

To design a new 20,000m2 Contemporary Museum Extension next to the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.

Location

Melbourne Art District,

Melbourne, Australia

Site

77 Southbank Boulevard, Melbourne

The studio will investigate the role of the contemporary museum of the future. It will also question the relationship between the existing museum building and the new extention. The notion of ‘exhibition space’ between indoor climate controlled spaces and spontaneous outdoor spaces will be discussed and examined.
