Shanghai is home to one of the richest collections of art deco architecture in the world. A mix of western influences and ‘Chinese deco’, the city’s signature style saw its heyday in the 1930s and gives insight into the cultural movements of the era.

While the Bund offers itself to the rest of the world an eclectic assemblage of art deco skyscrapers, it is the local and everyday buildings that shape and define the characteristics of each cultural area. Drawing from an array of local art deco theatres and cultural buildings, the studio asks for the redesign of the Shanghai Theatre in Middle Fuxing Road (currently the site of Neri and Hu’s New Shanghai Theatre).

The studio seeks to speculate the role of a theatre building within the broader context of the city of Shanghai. We will examine the generative capacities of this cultural program and its possibility to reflect a sense of identity to its surrounding neighborhood. Each student will speculate and formulate a personal understanding of the meaning of contemporary art deco. The studio is aimed at developing skills in spatial atmosphere and sensitivity.
